UCSD Element Building Rooftop Air Handler Replacement

Complete replacement of HVAC Air Handling System for fully occupied 4-Story building with complex access issues in UCSD Health network of off-campus buildings. Removed existing systems and replaced with new chilled water cooled air handlers (2 each at 39,000 CFM) and associated return air fans (2 each at 37,600 CFM). Work completed over 3 consecutive weekends.

Crane to hoist equipment to rooftop, requiring a pre-coordinated shutdown of public street and sidewalks for each critical crane pick. Temporary rooftop system installed to support building occupants during installation.

Extensive access constraints and existing wireless phone network antennae system installed above air handlers required constructing the system in place. Energy efficiency improvements included variable frequency drives (VFD’s), new damper systems and economizers for new system.
